Times have changed, but our commitment to your pet’s care has not.
Effective August 1, our on-call services for small animals (dogs, cats, etc.) will change. We will continue to provide our on call emergency services through 10pm daily, Monday through Saturday, and from 6am until 10pm on Sunday. Our normal hours of service will resume on August 1 as well. The open hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 7:30am until 6:30pm, Friday 8am until 5pm, and Saturday 8am until 12pm.
Please know that this is not a decision we take lightly, however, we feel strongly that this is the right decision for our patients and staff. We have learned that offering the only on-call service in our community over the years has its benefits, it also comes at a cost to our team’s wellbeing and work/life balance. At HVC, we feel that prioritizing the health and wellbeing of our staff is just as important as prioritizing that of the pets in our care. At this time especially, our staff is working extended hours and additional shifts to manage the high volume of appointments we are seeing through COVID-19. As you can imagine, this, combined with on-call shifts, has led to exhaustion for many of our doctors and staff, so we are choosing to encourage rest and balance for our highly valued team members, which will in turn benefit our clients and patients.
This new coverage model still offers you the most coverage of any local hospital and we hope it still gives you peace of mind that we’ll be there for you when you’ll need us. Your kindness and patience during this time means more than you know, and we appreciate those of you who have continued to support our hospital through this challenging time.
If your small animal requires care after hours, please contact Animal Emergency Clinic of Mid-Maine (Lewiston) at 207-777-1110 , Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic (Brewer) at 207-989-6267, or Midcoast Animal Emergency Clinic (Warren) at 207-273-1100. There will be no change to large animal on-call hours.
COVID-19 Update and Information
Dear clients of HVC,
Thank you very much for your patience and trust during this uncertain time in the midst of COVID-19. Our team is fully committed to continuing care for your pets. As the current health situation unfolds, we are updating the policies we have established for the foreseeable future to ensure the health of all clients, patients, and staff:
- As always, there will be no change in emergency coverage for all current clients. If you are a current client at HVC and your pet has had a wellness visit within the last year, please continue to call 207-453-7387 at any time in the event of an emergency.
- As we are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation, we are continuing to offer curbside services at this time to ensure the safety of both our staff and clients while providing high quality care to our pets. If your pet has a scheduled appointment or surgery, please remain in your vehicle and call us at 207-453-7387 when you arrive to check in and have one of our staff obtain a pertinent history of your pet over the phone. A staff member will come out to you and bring your pet inside for an exam and any needed diagnostics/treatment while you remain in your vehicle. Please be available for a call from our medical team to obtain additional information and discuss treatment recommendations. Following treatment, we will deliver your pet back to your car, along with any medications that may be needed. Payment can be handled via card over the phone or via cash/check delivered to a staff member. If your pet has experienced documented anxiety/aggression at the vet, please let us know and we may adjust our procedures as needed on an individual basis.
- At this time, we are starting to re-open appointments for wellness visits and elective surgeries. Please note that we have a significant backlog of wellness visits and elective surgeries that must be rescheduled. We are working from a list of clients/patients that will be rescheduled first before scheduling any new appointment/surgery requests. If you would like to discuss your pet’s wellness needs, please call us at 207-453-7387.
We thank you again for your continued patience and understanding at this time.
